Is Interlaken worth it?

“Is Interlaken worth it?” is rarely a question about scenery. Nobody doubts the Bernese Oberland is beautiful. The question underneath is whether the town earns the night, or whether it is a pretty crossroads that travellers stop in because the trains do. It is a fair doubt, and the honest answer starts by conceding half of it.

Interlaken is not a monument town. There is no cathedral to queue for, and the shopping streets are pleasant rather than remarkable. If you arrive, walk to the Höhematte meadow, watch the paragliders land, eat well and leave the next morning, you will go home thinking it was fine. Fine is the worst review this place gets, and it is always a review of a day spent inside the town rather than out of it.

What Interlaken actually is, is a base with an unusual amount of choice around it. The name means between the lakes, and that is the whole proposition: Lake Thun on one side, Lake Brienz on the other, and behind them the valleys that lead to Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and the cable-car villages on the cliff. From one hotel room you can reach four completely different kinds of day, and you can reach them all before dinner. That is rare. Most mountain towns give you one thing done well.

So the four directions are the answer, and they are worth naming plainly. Up is the gondola to Mount First above Grindelwald, with the First Cliff Walk pinned to the rock at the top station and the path onwards towards Bachalpsee. On the water is a day moving between villages on two lakes with one ticket, or a fast run on Lake Brienz, or a kayak on the turquoise water below the cliffs. Add $26 at the bottom of the same valley and one trip out of town gives you the view from above and the galleries cut into the rock below.

Best day on the water: $142 for the turquoise lake, the cliffs and Ringgenberg Castle with a coach and a 6:1 group, 4.9 across 265 reviews. $147 if you have an afternoon rather than a day, 4.7 across 403. And $51 if what you want is the run of both lakes on one ticket, with Lake Thun through the year and Lake Brienz from early April to mid-October.
